LATINO 100

What’s the best measure of corporate support for the Latino community? Someone must know, because every year there appears a host of listings ranking companies in numerical order. The compilation of such lists has become a cottage industry, and companies proudly announce their rankings with press releases.

While we are loath to say the emperor has no clothes, there are a number of difficulties with this approach. First, the numerical order of many rankings is often quite arbirary. Is there really a valid quantitative difference between companies 32 and 33 on such-and-such a list? Also, the criteria don’t often apply equally to companies in different industries. For example, a retail company operating in Texas may have a large number of Latino employees simply because there’s no one else to hire. A financial services company in Minnesota may have a smaller percentage of Latinos in its workforce, but does this mean that it’s any less committed to workforce diversity? Not necessarily.

Having said this, what value can our own listing add? While we’ll leave that to our readers, our approach in the LATINO 100 is somewhat different. There was no survey. Nominations were submitted both formally and informally by Latino nonprofits and community organizations as well as our readers, partners and stakeholders. The listing, which appears alphabetically, was compiled by the editors of LATINO from these nominations based upon our own research and information gathering. Those companies profiled alongside the listing are not necessarily the “best of the best,” though they are representative of their industries and serve as corporate role models.

Our objective was to present a perspective on corporate support for the Latino community in areas like philanthropy, workforce diversity, minority business development and governance. We have certain biases. Education remains one of the most importatn challenges facing our community, and we profiled companies such as ExxonMobil, Cisco, Microsoft and Lockheed because of their strong support for encouraging Latinos to enter the STEM fields. The resurgent automotive industry is well-represented, particularly by GM, Chrysler and Toyota. Certain financial service and insurance companies like Wells Fargo and Nationwide are represented, even if the industry as a whole is not.

One glaring gap is the hi-tech sector, and two of the most dominant companies are missing in action. While Apple may well make the world’s best smart phones, an arrogant and secretive corporate culture doesn’t foster diversity. We literally couldn’t identify a single example of Apple’s engagement with Latinos. And while Google pledges to “do no evil,” virtually all it has done for our community is spend millions to lobby for net neutrality, which could raise the cost of internet access and further broaden the digital divide, according to many Latino leaders.

Some though not all of the companies listed were contacted by our researchers. Interestingly enough, some refused to be included, citing negative experiences in the past with other such lists. We complied with this request out of courtesy. Others asked whether there was a cost involved in being included. Needless to say, there was not.

In the following pages, then, we present our first annual LATINO 100, the top companies providing the most opportunities for Latinos. In addition to the address and website, we’ve included the name of the CEO. Many thanks to all those who helped us in this effort.
